- Figural teapot based on a tengu, a legendary being from Japanese mythology. A tengu is a type of yōkai (supernatural being) or kami (god) from Japanese folklore, depicted with both human and bird-like characteristics, most notably a long, humanized nose or beak. Initially seen as demonic enemies of Buddhism, tengu evolved into respected mountain spirits associated with martial arts, forest protection, and ascetic practices, serving as powerful, mischievous, yet sometimes protective figures.
- Spout is formed from the tengu\'s elongated nose and his face glares with a fierce expression. Lots of fine detail, such as to his hair, and gilt highlights to his eyes. Dragonfly shaped handle adds additional interest.
- Unusual piece with lots of character which is sure to be a talking point.
- Overall good condition for age. There are some small imperfections, such as a mark on his forehead and a crack on the underside which appear to have occurred during firing rather than being from wear. There are some small chips to the tip of the spout. See photos for more detail. Also, originally it is possible there was some sort of lid, which has since been lost.
